Just 280 bottles exist of this most rare of wines, a Coteaux Champenois Blanc. To be clear, this is a still white wine from the Champagne region—the clearest sign that a Champagne vigneron views their wine as wine, not just a celebratory sparkling drink.
As with all of Stéphane’s wines this is Grand Cru Chardonnay from chalky soils in the Côte des Blancs. It's always a treat to find a winemaker interpret his fruit in different ways, and Mixolydien No°16 is crafted from the same single vineyard ‘Le Moulin Oger’ of Grand Cru Oger, just like the more traditional No°29. -

Stéphane’s vines are all Grand Cru, mostly in Oger and Le Mesnil, and his total output is around 10,000 bottles spread across 4 cuvées.
Any businessman would say: why?
Any artist would say: why not?
Before returning to his family vineyards in the Côte des Blancs in 2007, Stéphane was both an aerospace engineer and a sommelier in London. The artistic side of him clearly won out. His first vintage was in 2018, and if his early vintages are any sign of his craft, this is a winemaker to watch.
