  • 2021 seems to have brought a realignment of Theo's perception of Pinot Noir. For one, his "Wholebunch" cuvée has been replaced with "Zealandia", which is a blend of all the soils in North Canterbury and that features zero whole bunches in the fermentation.

Instead, what he seeks is harmony, a combination of the "complexity and diversity" of the soil, as he puts it, featuring gravel, basalt, clay, and limestone terroir. The fermentation takes places naturally as always, with a long maceration, and 100% ageing in amphora.

It's a bold new approach, but represents an increasing maturity and evolution of Theo's approach. As mere merchants, we can only look from abroad and applaud.

  • In 2012 Theo Coles discovered the Limestone Hills vineyard in Canterbury in the north of New Zealand’s South Island. Owned by Gareth Renowdon, Theo agreed to make some wine with him from his 1000 or so Pinot Noir vines.

Since then Theo has expanded the range to include the skin fermented Sauvignon Blanc and Müller-Thurgau, a field blend rosé and another Pinot Noir. The fruit comes from tiny vineyards throughout the Canterbury region, all naturally farmed without chemicals and Theo is keen to stress that every wine has its own story to tell.
