Domaine Guiberteau - Saumur Blanc 'Clos de Guichaux' 2013
This product is currently sold out.
If you want killer Chenin at a killer price, then look no further. This is meant to age, and it will reward you heavily for it. Just like the basic Saumur, this is 100% whole-bunch pressed Chenin Blanc from the single-vineyard of Clos de Guichaux in Brézé. This has all the freshness and cut of all Romain's wines, but with the addition of serious complexity.
There's a flinty austere element to the nose that opens up to show citrus, tropical fruit, and white flowers. It's pure, elegant, but flushed with emotion. On the palate as the glass warms we get some salinity and lots of minerality; despite coming from young vines this is an immense effort.

"This cuvée comes from young vines which were planted in 2006, the soils in this clos sandy over limestone. This has matchsticky citrus fruits on the nose, laced with mango richness, and a beautifully smoky limestone confidence. There follows a savoury and freshly saline character on the palate, with a great mineral tension interwoven with rather exotic orange and other citrus fruits. This is very impressive."
Domaine Guiberteau is a special estate for our Loire fans. Winemaker and owner Romain Guiberteau has learned from the best—his neighbours and mentors in Clos Rougeard, and is one of the real rising stars of Saumur. He is most renowned for his whites, but his reds carry the same statuesque structure and striking minerality. He works biodynamically, with wild yeasts only.
